By 3 months of age, your baby has gone through the transformation from a totally dependent newborn to an active and responsive infant. They’ll have more voluntary control of their body, and will take much enjoyment in this new skill as they explore their fingers and toes, and your facial expressions! Your baby’s nervous system is still immature, and at 3 months it is at its peak of growth. With the brain and central nervous system developing, we see a lot of babies wanting to be closer to their parents. Remember it’s a phase that can feel like it’s going to last forever, but it really will shift. We may see this level of sensitivity into month 4 and 5.
Milestones
At the 3 month mark, your baby is getting really strong, and starting to really show interest in the world around them. Here are some milestones you’ll notice about your baby:
Raises head and chest when lying on stomach
Supports upper body with arms when lying on stomach
Stretches legs out and kicks when lying on stomach or back
Opens and shuts hands
Pushes down on legs when feet are placed on a firm surface
Brings hand to mouth
Takes swipes at dangling objects with hands
Grasps and shakes hand toys
Watches faces intently
